A much-loved and ubiquitous toy from the 1970s and 80s, Texas Instruments Speak & Spell has found a new lease of life in electronica in the last few years. People discovered that if you tinker with its circuits and voice chips, glitching, looping, and other interesting effects can be achieved. ‘Circuit Bending’, as this is known, is said to have begun in the late 1960s, and its invention is attributed to one Reed Ghazala, after a fortuitous accident with a toy amplifier. Since I have been working on a set of Kontakt instruments for Audiomotif I became more and more interrested in Kontakt as a sound design tool. While mainly engineered towards the chromatic instrument simulations – Kontakts built in effects and scripting language allows you to create very effective sound design tools.
We found this little gem on one of the Japanese websites. Cinematica contatins over 2GB of samples ranging from toy pianos to electric guitars and percussions. Some sounds are decent some are just mapped along the keyboard but overall its a great sound library. Props to whoever made this.
